Injection therapy can be an effective treatment method for relieving pain in the back and throughout the body. There are several types of steroid injection techniques. Here we discuss two of the most common: lumbar epidural steroid injections, and sacroiliac joint steroid injections.
Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections
Lumbar epidural steroid injections are typically used to treat pain in the low back and/or legs. The procedure is quick and easy for the patient. It begins with local anesthetic to numb the injection area in the back. Then a needle is inserted into the patient’s back and guided to the epidural space near the spinal cord. A steroid is injected into the epidural space, reducing inflammation and pain in the area. These injections can provide pain relief for up to a year, depending on the patient.
Sacroiliac Joint Steroid Injections
Steroid injections to the sacroiliac joint are similar to lumbar injections. The biggest difference is the location to which the steroids are delivered. These injections are delivered to the sacroiliac joints (which connect the base of the spine to the hips). Certain conditions, such as sciatica, can cause inflammation and pain in this area. Sacroiliac injections are used to reduce these symptoms and can be used as a diagnostic tool.
Pain injections are a great option for patients who wish to avoid surgery or for those who are not good candidates for spine surgery. Talk with a pain management specialist to see if steroidal injections might be a good option for your pain.
