Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)
If you or your loved ones suffer from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis (RA), this naturally occurring protein found in the blood plasma may be very beneficial to you.
A2M is a major immune system molecule that is found in the blood plasma. A2M is a broad-spectrum multi-purpose protease inhibitor that can inactivate many types of proteinases, specifically Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs). This is important because MMPs can degrade cartilage cells or chondrocytes, which is one of the major causes of arthritis. When these proteinases are inhibited, arthritis pain and function can improve.
How does the A2M Injection Work?
A2M injections are performed in the office procedure rooms with ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. With the oversight of a doctor, a member of our trained staff will draw around 120 cc’s of your blood, which then will be processed in our lab for about 10-15 minutes.
It is important to know that when you research A2M, or any biologic therapy, you should be certain your doctor is using the latest techniques and technology. Dr. Thorson is well-versed in both ultrasound and fluoroscopically guided procedures, so you can be assured your regenerative products are getting into the correct area. We can also provide sedation for any procedure for patients who don’t like injections.
